The word "donor" in Latin means «donare» — «to give» and this meaning is entirely justified, since the gift to the recipient is often life.

It's no coincidence that this international holiday is celebrated on 14 June. On this day in 1868 the famous scientist, Austrian physician and immunologist Karl Landsteiner, was born. In 1930 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his services to medicine, as he was responsible for the important discovery of the division of human blood groups, which, in essence, became a breakthrough in the field of medicine.

Thanks to Karl Landsteiner's scientific achievements, scientists realized that transfusing just any blood into a person is not an option: transfusing blood of matching blood types proved safer for people. Landsteiner's breakthrough was then recognized and adopted by the medical community.
