1 On June 1, on International Children's Day, the Charity Foundation "Little Bee" organized a wonderful event – a trip to the Belgorod-Dnistrovsky Fortress. For our regular helpers – volunteers and their children, with the support of PAO "Severtrans" Represented by Director Yuriy Aleksandrovich Savchenko, who kindly provided us with a comfortable bus, we traveled to Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi to visit the Akkerman Fortress.
The weather was wonderful, the mood was excellent... We were met at the fortress by the Director of the KP "Fortress" Natalia Ubeynik and Tina Fedoseyeva, the tour guide. The gates of history “”opened before us. We saw endless blue skies, chamomile fields, and olive trees. Tina showed us the sights and gave us a very interesting and informative tour about the fortress's history. We learned that the fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi lies on the rocky shore of the Dniester Estuary and has the shape of an irregular polygon. It is founded on the remains of the ancient city of Tyras. The history of its construction is linked to the need to protect the city from the constant attacks of numerous enemies. There are various versions of the fortress's construction, but the Akkerman Fortress was built 200 years ago. Some believe it was Turkish, others – Moldovan, and the citadel – Genoese. For its time, the fortress was a fairly powerful military defensive structure. For many centuries, the fortress played an important role in the history of our country and repeatedly defended the city from enemy attacks.
Length of the Akkerman Fortress's defensive walls Fortress – approximately 2,5 km, the height of the walls and towers – from 5 to 15 m, thickness – from 1,5 to 5 m. To the north, the fortress in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi is washed by the waters of the estuary, and on the other three sides it is surrounded by a deep moat cut into the rock. Initially, the moat was filled with water, its depth was approximately 20 m, width – 14 m. In addition, the inner wall of the moat protruded until 2 and served as protection for those who guarded it.
Children and parents were so captivated by the stories about the fortress that they wanted to touch the historic walls themselves, to explore all the courtyards, towers, rooms, and basements. Most surprising and shocking of all was the torture chamber, where various torture instruments were on display.
As our holiday continued, we enjoyed an entertainment program: brightly colored balloons, jokes, contests, dancing, and master classes from Alexander Kolesnichenko. The kind and cheerful mime artist Alex Hilman and his assistants, Sergey and Dmitry, performed cheerful skits in which both parents and children were able to participate. Gradually, other visitors to the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Fortress joined in our celebration. This was great news, – meaning the holiday was a great success. And at the end of the celebration, we congratulated the children with delicious and healthy gifts – oranges, tangerines, and magazines "Little Bee".
