Nastia told her story herself:

«My name is Nastia and I come from the beautiful city of Odesa. I am an ordinary girl and, until recently, lived an ordinary life. But at the end of August 2014 my life took a sharp turn — I was diagnosed with a severe form of aplastic anaemia. The cause of the disease: not established.

Now I am far, far from my native and beloved city — in Jerusalem, Israel, to be exact. Here I am in hospital under the strict care of doctors, since the 11th of September.

What is aplastic anaemia in essence? In everyday speech this illness is called more simply — «lack of blood». It is the inability of the bone marrow to produce enough blood cells for normal life. In my case these blood cells are practically not produced at all.

At present my condition is grave. Anaemia — is a very unpleasant thing, because it means I constantly have a high risk of bleeding into the internal organs, which can give serious complications, and against the background of anaemia I have developed severe immunodeficiency (so my home now — is a sterile unit). All that keeps me alive lately — is blood transfusions. But never mind, it can be worse — I have got used to all the troubles and believe that everything will be well. However, long treatment lies ahead of me — a bone marrow transplant (in Ukraine such operations are not performed). Before it I have to go through another short course of chemotherapy, and after the transplant itself — a hard and critical period of rehabilitation.

A bone marrow transplant from an unrelated donor costs $ 182 822. For all the expensive examinations and hospitalisation $ 70 000 has already been paid. My family simply cannot raise such a sum of money on its own, and we do not have much time either. The state of my blood leaves much to be desired and there is simply no time to delay. That is why I am writing this story and shall be grateful with all my soul if you respond to my plea for help! A big and heartfelt «Thank you!» in advance to everyone who cares about me and my situation."

In 2013 Anastasiia finished school with a medal and entered the I. I. Mechnikov Odesa National University. After her first year she received a grant to study Greek. Before leaving for Greece, in July, small spots appeared on Nastia's legs; she was given two immunoglobulin drips and flew to Greece for a month. In Greece bruises appeared on Nastia's arms and legs, and she caught a cold (temperature 38,5), her throat hurt. A doctor was called who prescribed medicines, and two days later Nastia went on with her studies. On 25 August 2014 Nastia came back to Odesa, and the next day the girl felt weak and dizzy. A blood test was done urgently. The result — platelets 40 (with a norm of 120−140). She was given a referral for a consultation with a haematologist. On 29 August her temperature rose to 39,5. Signs of tonsillitis appeared again and the throat was treated (antibiotics, gargling). Nothing helped, the temperature did not fall, and on 1 September they turned to the clinic «INTO-SANA». Nastia was admitted at once to the intensive care unit; she needed blood and plasma (haemoglobin 40, platelets 40). On 3 September a bone marrow trephine biopsy was performed, and on 4 September it was repeated. Diagnosis: severe form of aplastic anaemia.

Nastia's parents went for a consultation to the haematology department of the regional clinical hospital. The doctor who saw the girl said that with such a diagnosis there is only a 30% chance that treatment can help. Meanwhile the platelets fell to 4. The parents were advised to send their sick child for treatment to Israel. But with such counts Nastia was forbidden to fly. Over 5 days the doctors of the clinic «INTO-SANA» prepared Nastia for the flight, and on 10 September 2014 she was taken by ambulance to the aircraft. Accompanied by a doctor, Nastia and her mother flew to Israel.

Every day at the clinic costs 1600 dollars; Nastia has to be under constant supervision by medical staff. Her condition is steadily grave.
