Bohdan was born a healthy and strong little boy. He and his mother were discharged from the maternity hospital on time. The child grew and developed according to his age. In September 2012, at the age of 6, he became a first-former. Nothing foretold trouble, but then in November 2012 he was diagnosed with a tumour of the brain stem (pilocytic astrocytoma, benign).
The boy was operated on at the Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery, Kyiv. Unfortunately, the tumour could not be removed completely; part of it — had to be left in the brain stem as inoperable.
For four months, the boy breathed through a tracheostomy. Until today, he is fed with a nasogastric tube, and cannot sit or walk independently. —

Bohdan needs urgent rehabilitation, constant supervision and treatment. After a consultation and examination of the child by the specialists of the «Nodus» neurorehabilitation centre in Brovary, a bill was issued for 368 642 UAH for a 6-month course of rehabilitation at that centre, a sum beyond Bohdan's family.
Until the parents managed on their own, but now that's no longer possible. Bogdan's parents are appealing to everyone who has not remained indifferent to their misfortune to help cure their son.

From a letter from Bohdan's mother:
Hello, dear director and volunteers, and all those who are participating and helping raise funds for Bohdan Polyuga's recovery. We, the parents, would like to inform you that funds for 28.03.13 have been raised — 142580 UAH. 96, and we still need to raise 141743 UAH. 29.
This is only a preliminary amount and is subject to change, as we don't have the invitation yet. It's possible it will arrive by mail by the end of this week, as it's already been sent, and then we'll know the cost of the treatment.
Yesterday, Bogdan went without dinner, coughed violently, and vomited because he couldn't swallow. He's been coughing up mucus, needing to clear it up, and the severe coughing is causing vomiting. If only anyone knew how excruciatingly painful it is to watch my son in this condition, and it happens quite often.

From Bogdan's mother's letter:
Bogdan had an MRI, after which we consulted with the doctor who performed the surgery in Kyiv. The doctor said there were no changes, only slight positive dynamics, and we could begin rehabilitation.
We told him we wanted to begin rehabilitation in Nodus. The doctor categorically forbade us to go there and said that the treatments they offer, namely medication stimulation, were not suitable for us, as they could stimulate growth of the remaining tumor. They wouldn't help, but would only harm us, and we'd waste time and money.
After our trip to Kyiv, we began searching for other clinics and are currently negotiating with various countries. So far, only one clinic, Elvira Walter, has responded. Elvira is a speech therapist who specializes in swallowing, speech, and facial nerve rehabilitation. They've issued a preliminary invoice for 3 months of rehabilitation and accommodation.

From Bohdan's mother's letter:
On Monday (15. 07. 2013) Bohdan was discharged from Odesa Regional Children's Hospital, where for 3 weeks he was treated for acute right-sided pneumonia caused not by a cold, but by consequences absence swallowing and ingestion of food into the trachea. Bogdanchik's condition is satisfactory. He has started visiting the salt cave on Makhachkala Street. We hope that this at least a little will help extend the time Bogdanchik stays at home, without medication.
