15 November 2013

On 15 November Emilichka had her transplant; everything went well. Before the transplant Emilichka went through high-dose chemotherapy. Our little girl's condition is now stable. She tolerated the chemotherapy and the lymphocyte immunoglobulin very badly. On day 10 after the transplant single donor cells began to appear.

According to our doctor, a rather hard period is beginning for Emiliia; graft-versus-host disease lies ahead of us. There is a problem with her appetite, she eats nothing but biscuits. But as the doctors explained, that is normal, she is fed through a vein.

Today there is a CT scan of the lungs and abdomen. At times her temperature rises to 37.5-37.8. Emilichka is a very strong and brave child, she bears all the procedures steadfastly, and we pray for her further recovery! A huge thank you to everyone who has not stayed indifferent to our misfortune.

Yesterday we were discharged to the day ward. We have begun the examinations before the transplant. According to the CT results the lungs are fine! Emilichka is also taking the antifungal drug Noxafil. Emilka feels well. The donor request has already been sent to Germany. Now we are waiting for an answer, and the exact date of the transplant will be set. Thank you all very much! For your help and support!

Emiliia feels all right! The CT scan of the lungs revealed fungal foci. Antifungal and antibacterial therapy was prescribed. Today a CT scan was done again, the progress is positive. Emiliia is still not eating and is fed through a vein. On Thursday her bowel and oesophagus will be examined with a micro camera. Her test results are normal, at times there is vomiting, there is no temperature. Thank you very much for your kind hearts!

Emilia's condition is improving, but her blood pressure and temperature rise occasionally. Antiviral medications have been prescribed, her liver function tests have improved, and she's taking Heptral. Her blood work is holding up, thank God; the ultrasound shows everything is normal. They're gradually weaning her off the antibiotics, but she'll still be taking the antifungals for a long time. She's slowly starting to get back on her feet, but it's still a struggle. I hope and believe we'll overcome this soon.

13 In August, Emilia was transferred from the intensive care unit to the ward. She spent a month in intensive care after 2 complex intestinal surgeries to remove a fungal infection. Now my daughter is feeling much better and is undergoing antibacterial and antifungal therapy. An abdominal ultrasound shows normal results, thank God, and her test results are holding up. She was prescribed blood pressure medication, which rises very frequently. Emilia can't walk because she's been lying down for a long time, isn't eating, and has been receiving intravenous nutrition for over a month.

10 December 2012

Emilia is now with her mother. 5 She was transferred to the ward in December. They are in a separate room because her test results were zero after the main medications were administered. She is currently receiving antibiotics, antifungals, and antivirals. Emilia is doing well, but she's not feeling well. The doctor forbids her from leaving the room, but she wants to go to the playroom. They are currently preparing for the New Year.

According to the mother, once their blood counts return, they will be transferred to the day hospital. They are trying their best to get their blood counts back up so they can at least celebrate New Year's at home (i.e., in the apartment).

4 December 2012

Emilia's condition is currently stable, but she is in a very low mood. She misses her mother. Tomorrow marks the end of Emilia's stay in the sterile isolation ward. And on Thursday, mother and daughter will be together.

Her white blood cell count has dropped significantly. Along with her regular medications, she is receiving antibiotics and antifungals.

29 November 2012  

Yesterday, Emilia was taken to a sterile room in the BMT department; today is the first day of treatment. The doctors are not giving a prognosis yet. 28 In November, she received blood and platelet transfusions. The doctor said anything could happen during treatment. 

Emilia will spend the entire 7 her life without her loved ones. But such sacrifices are required for treatment. We hope that the girl will endure this ordeal with courage and that the treatment will yield positive results!

The question remains whether Emilia will receive a bone marrow transplant or whether she will need a long course of treatment. She will need to undergo repeat tests, as the first time an insufficient amount of bone tissue was taken, and there was no response. Bone tissue for analysis is taken under anesthesia, using surgery. This test is necessary to determine whether Emilia's condition is congenital or acquired. The test results will determine whether the little girl needs surgery or long-term medication treatment.

After studying the history of similar transplants in more detail, Emilia's mother is leaning more toward treatment than surgery, as it's unknown how the bone marrow will engraft and what changes the transplant will cause during adolescence, given that the girl is still very young.

Emilia is currently taking medication to reduce the amount of iron in her body. A month's course of treatment with these medications costs 20 800 UAH! We hope that she won't need these medications in the future, as this is a very significant expense for her parents.

27 September 2012  

Emilia has been undergoing treatment in the oncohematology department of the Odessa Regional Hospital for over a year. She has already completed one course of therapy, but it was ineffective. The girl urgently needs a bone marrow transplant. Belarusian doctors have agreed to perform the operation. The cost is 150 000 dollars. Emilia's family is asking for help from caring people.
