Andrey Lazarenko 22 years old, all these years can be called a struggle for the right to live. He was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease (PKD) at birth, when on the second day of his life he was admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit of the Regional Children's Hospital. When his mother was discharged from the maternity hospital and she was able to be with him, he was transferred to the neonatal pathology department. When the young parents approached the head of the department to inquire about the prospects for their son's future, they were replied: «I already have two in the morgue. Take your child home, give him a name so that he can be buried with this name. » And since then the fight began for the right to live another day, month, year. There were numerous consultations with doctors in Odesa, Kyiv. He was hospitalized many times . But since 13 he received a new diagnosis of chronic renal failure because his condition worsened. But the fight for the right to live continued. By Unfortunately, in May 2016 her condition had worsened even more critically. New diagnoses appeared: polycystic kidney disease in both kidneys, chronic kidney disease 5 stage, (SCF 5ml/min. According to SKDEPI), nephrosclerosis, arterial hypertension 3 stage, 4 stage. risk, hypertensive heart disease, chronic renal failure, uremia, anemia, and secondary cardiopathy. Hemodialysis is recommended on a cost-effective basis, as there are many people waiting for free hemodialysis. A kidney transplant is recommended. And since in Ukraine, a law permitting cadaveric organ transplantation has not yet been adopted. Good afternoon. All this time, Andrey has been on hemodialysis, which is performed every other day. Every 4-4.5 hour, his blood passes through a filter to remove toxins using a hemodialysis machine, which performs the function of the kidneys. Between dialysis sessions, uremic state, nausea, and dizziness increase. Andrey's life depends entirely on a machine the size of a small refrigerator. And if something minor happens to ordinary people—a power outage, a water shortage—in his case, it is life-threatening, as hemodialysis sessions are impossible. This means all the toxins will remain in his body and will simply kill him. It's very difficult to control the constantly rising parathyroid hormone level because the kidneys no longer regulate this process. If high parathyroid hormone levels persist for a long time, the parathyroid glands will have to be removed, which is generally unfavorable. Therefore Andrey has to constantly take a huge number of pills to maintain calcium, phosphorus, and parathyroid hormone levels, as these 3 elements interact with each other. We constantly struggle to keep hemoglobin levels at least at 110. He has to take injections two or three times a week to maintain hemoglobin levels. In preparation for a kidney transplant, we are successfully treating hepatitis C. I would like to use your website to thank Dr. – Elena Levchenko Mikhailovna, who showed compassion in this situation and helped us partially obtain medications under the hepatitis C treatment program. "Hello! We haven't written to you for a long time, because during this time, significant changes have occurred, but unfortunately, not for the better. Since 15.03.2017 Andrey has been receiving hemodialysis on a self-supporting basis, because there are no available spots on the city dialysis service.
Despite the fact that Andrey has had polycystic kidney disease since birth and chronic kidney disease since 13 years, he was placed on the dialysis waiting list quite late , and therefore he is currently waiting for a spot on hemodialysis.
The waiting list for free dialysis advances as people receive kidney transplants or die. Unfortunately, the city hasn't opened any new sites yet. The cost of a single hemodialysis session — 2300-2500 UAH, depending on the type of machine they're assigned to.
Dialysis Andrey is very difficult to endure. At first, I vomited both after dialysis and during the procedure, severe dizziness, confusion, and a long time to recover from these sessions. Now, after a month of dialysis, the vomiting has stopped, but the dizziness and confusion remain. At the beginning of the 2 session, blood pressure rises sharply — to 180-200 at 60. Hemoglobin rises very slowly . Currently, — 70 g/L. It needs to be raised artificially since the kidneys are not functioning properly. Phosphorus-calcium metabolism must be constantly monitored, because it is also artificially maintained with medications.
We are asking all our benefactors for help. The monthly amount needed to maintain vital body functions is — 35 000 UAH. Discontinuing dialysis due to lack of funds threatens the development of uremic state and death.
Andrey was diagnosed with hepatitis C. We went to Kyiv for a consultation at the Gromashevsky Institute of Infectious Diseases to begin treatment, since the Odessa hepatology center doesn't treat such patients. We collected a huge number of test results and submitted him for treatment. We hope for a quick response."

"Unfortunately, Andrey's condition has worsened significantly over the past month: severe lower back pain, constant nausea and vomiting, dizziness, and a sharp increase in blood pressure. Instead of the usual morning and evening medication dosage, I had to take it several times during the day. Creatinine rose from 880 to 1054 (normal 74-100), urea 72,9 (normal 2,8 - 7,2), uric acid 623 (normal 208- 428,4). Despite all our efforts, we constantly inject Epobiocrin in combination with Gino-Tardiferon, but hemoglobin refuses to rise above 81 . A month ago, we had a consultation in Zaporizhzhia, and the nephrologists at the ZOB expressed concern that Andrei had not yet been accepted for dialysis in Odessa because... With such high readings, cerebral edema is possible, and then death is inevitable. Upon arrival in Odessa, dialysis was offered at the sanatorium "Sartus" on a paid basis. Approximately 2500 UAH per session. How many will be needed 3 per week, and how long will he need to stay at "Sartus" is unknown. The uncertainty of the situation is frightening, as dialysis can't be delayed any longer; he's already had a fistula inserted, but interrupting the dialysis that's already started because the funds suddenly run out is also unacceptable. This also carries a mortal risk, as we were warned at the city hemodialysis center. Currently, treatment costs approximately 10 000 - 11 0000 UAH per month. If dialysis is added, the family's chances of raising enough money for a kidney transplant will be completely slim. Therefore, we are asking all caring people for help. Furthermore, Andrey's examination revealed hepatitis C. Considering that Andrey had never had dental work done, his teeth were in perfect condition, he had never had any tattoos or piercings, and he did not use drugs, it is unfortunately safe to assume that he contracted the infection in the maternity hospital on the second day of his life, during a blood transfusion. The prospects for treating hepatitis are good, as liver function tests and liver elastography are normal. Naturally, hepatitis C must be treated before a kidney transplant, which is possible while the patient is on dialysis. He has a good chance of receiving the transplant itself, as his heart is healthy, and given his underlying condition, it has grown and developed normally, there are no ulcers in his stomach, and his lungs are normal. There's good news: his parathyroid hormone has dropped from 1976 to 519. He's still a long way off from reaching normal (12-65), but his chances are still good."

Andrey still hasn't been accepted for free hemodialysis. They promise a new shift will open soon, but when is unknown. According to his indications, he has been on dialysis for six months. The decision was made to agree to self-supporting dialysis, as waiting any longer is dangerous. Dialysis cannot be interrupted. Andrey is very much hoping for your help in raising funds for a life-saving kidney transplant. We are currently doing everything possible to maintain the hemoglobin levels necessary for the surgery (iron IV and Epobiocrin).
At the end of October, Andrey submitted an application for financial assistance for dialysis and surgery to the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the City Council, but has not yet received a response.
