In November 2012 Zhenia was given a terrible diagnosis: «myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), RAEB type two». Behind these terms, intelligible only to doctors, lies a pathology of the bone marrow and peripheral blood that leads to dysplastic changes in mature cells and to their functional failure. With this diagnosis only a bone marrow transplant can help.

To save the child, his parents and many relatives agreed to become donors. Sadly, none of them proved suitable as a donor, and transplants from an unrelated donor are not performed in Ukraine.

Zhenia's parents are not going to give up; they began fighting for his life and approached clinics abroad.

Refusal followed refusal until a positive answer came from the university clinic in Cologne. The boy was examined by Professor F. Berthold, who confirmed the diagnosis and that Zhenia needs an allogeneic bone marrow transplant. Specialists of the university clinic in the German city of Essen are ready to carry out this operation.

Preliminary diagnostics were carried out in order to search for a donor. His parents managed to pay for this stage of preparation for the extremely complex operation, 45 000 euros. Money that is enormous by Ukrainian standards was raised by the whole world, and when it had been collected it seemed that a miracle had happened.

But then a new bill appeared — 198 000 euros — that is exactly what the transplant operation itself will cost. And his parents lost heart. That is already an «astronomical» sum, which the family, after the child's illness, will never be able to raise on its own.

Today the life of Zhenia Kulchytskyi is valued at 2 178 000 UAH. It is a huge sum, which can be raised only by joining forces. Let us help Zhenia become healthy, and his family — happy.
